The highly anticipated documentary Melania explores the life of the former First Lady in the days leading up to Donald Trump’s second inauguration, offering a rare glimpse into her public duties, personal routines, and behind-the-scenes world of the White House.
Amazon’s $40 million documentary, Melania, centered on former First Lady Melania Trump, will not be shown in South African cinemas, as local distributor Filmfinity pulled the film just days before its scheduled release.
"Based on recent developments, we’ve taken the decision to not go ahead with a theatrical release in territory," Thobashan Govindarajulu, Filmfinity’s head of sales and marketing, told The New York Times.
While citing unspecified recent developments, the move comes amid strained political relations between the US and South Africa, raising questions about whether politics, ticket sales, or other factors influenced the sudden cancellation.
The documentary, directed by Brett Ratner, follows Melania Trump during the 20 days leading up to the inauguration. Despite an aggressive promotional push and the president himself calling it a "must-watch," The New York Times reported that advance ticket sales remained weak.
Analysts describe Amazon’s $40 million investment as a significant financial gamble, with opening weekend projections around just $3 million, far below expectations.
While politics may shadow the release, the film’s deeper intrigue lies in Melania Trump's personal life, revealing a side seldom captured by cameras or media scrutiny.
Melania Trump documentary underscores boundaries within visibility
Melania Trump emphasized her independence and privacy during filming, describing the process as all-consuming yet fully under her control.
From organizing the East Wing to managing family commitments, the documentary highlights how she balanced official duties with personal boundaries, reflecting her selective approach to public exposure and her role as both a public figure and a private individual.
The 104-minute film offers rare access to Trump Tower, Mar-a-Lago, and the White House, providing viewers with a multifaceted perspective of life as First Lady.
Despite controversy surrounding its director and polarized reception, Melania remains a notable example of celebrity documentaries intersecting with politics, media, and personal narrative in today’s entertainment landscape.
