Stranger Things may have seen better days than what season 5 is showing it. The compensation for it, however, is taking place in the theater rather than the usual streamer.

Stranger Things: The First Shadow has come through as a saviour to the original show's slight drop in the audience's favour. As of December 28, 2025, the show has grossed more than $2.5 million at the box office.

The fifth season of Stranger Things has earned questioning glances with its slightly diverged plot for Volume 2. Meanwhile, as per Variety, Stranger Things: The First Shadow, with its fixed plot, has shot up the New York Marquis Theatre's own records.

The play, based on an original story by Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer, has surpassed its own record set just the previous week. The play had garnered $1,917,541 previously, as per another report by Deadline.

For Stranger Things to end, it had to begin somewhere, or rather, the first hint of darkness had to fall somewhere.

Before Stranger Things ever was

Stranger Things: The First Shadow had first commenced in December 2023, after a series of preview shows. Originally by the Duffer Brothers, the story was adapted by Stephen Daldry and Justin Martin for the stage.

The play is, in fact, not only a rendition of the show but the underlying premise of it. Treated as a prequel to Netflix's close-to-finale show, Stranger Things: The First Shadow first premiered at the West End, London's Phoenix Theatre.

As Stranger Things' tale comes to a close on Netflix, its history continues to create havoc onstage. Stranger Things: The First Shadow has rubbed off as a balm on the Hawkins-shaped bruises on the audience's expectations.
