Andy Serkis Teases Emotional Alfred Arc in 'The Batman Part II' Amid Filming Update

Whether it is his war against crime or the silent weight he carries as Gotham’s shadow, the Dark Knight of Gotham City is once again gearing up for a return after The Batman. And now, even before the sequel steps into production, Andy Serkis has already begun teasing an emotional turn in The Batman: Part II, hinting at a more layered and tragic arc that could reshape Bruce and Alfred’s bond.
While keeping specifics tightly under wraps, Andy Serkis, in a recent conversation with ScreenRant’s Liam Crowley while promoting Animal Farm, quietly dropped just enough to stir the fandom. Describing The Batman Part II as a “very emotional film,” he pointed to Matt Reeves’ perspective shaping the story, while hinting that Alfred and Bruce’s bond will remain deeply close, slightly at odds, and ultimately beautiful.
"The new story really does speak to Matt as a human being and what he feels about life. Rob and he got on brilliantly," Serkis said.

However, before stirring the fandom with hints of its emotional arc, Andy Serkis addressed Robert Pattinson’s remarks about filming beginning in May and revealed that he is currently tied up with The Hunt for Gollum, which may delay his immediate return. He also confirmed that he will join The Batman Part II by the end of the year, aligning his return with Gotham’s next chapter.
"won't be joining them immediately, but by the end of the year, I will be," Serkis told Screenrant.
While Pattinson and Reeves’ evolving dynamic leans into something conflicted yet beautiful, The Batman Part II is set to pull fans back into Gotham’s dark chaos.
Everything we know about The Batman Part II so far
Bringing back the shadows of Gotham with a sharper edge, The Batman Part II promises a bold, high-stakes return, with Robert Pattinson teasing a script that takes “big swings.” As Matt Reeves returns to direct and co-write the sequel with Mattson Tomlin, the film moves ahead in pre-production for its October 1, 2027, release. The team will begin filming in late May 2026 across London, Liverpool, and Glasgow under the working title “Semper Vigilans,” expanding Gotham’s dark, grounded world with greater scale and intensity.
Stepping back into Gotham’s chaos, Robert Pattinson returns as Batman, leading a growing ensemble that reportedly includes Sebastian Stan as Harvey Dent and Scarlett Johansson in an undisclosed role. Colin Farrell also reprises The Penguin, joined by Jeffrey Wright as Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred, and Barry Keoghan as the Joker, collectively deepening Gotham’s darker, more layered world.
As Gotham readies to pull its hero deeper into the shadows, Serkis’ revelation has already cracked open an emotional core in The Batman Part II, hinting that this time, the battle may hit closer to Bruce Wayne than ever before.
