AI's creep into art has sparked endless debates, with everyone from hobbyists to pros churning out Ghibli-style fakes that mimic Miyazaki's magic but lack its soul, prompting backlash over jobs lost and creativity cheapened. Now, anime titan WIT Studio has waded into the storm, using AI in it lastest and widely anticipated project. The immense backfire has led to an apology from them.

Anime powerhouse WIT Studio is facing a fan firestorm after admitting they slipped AI-generated art into the opening sequence of Ascendance of a Bookworm: Adopted Daughter of an Archduke. The controversy erupted when sharp-eyed viewers clocked unnatural frames in the OP, sparking outrage across forums and social media. Following the spotting, WIT Studios issued an apology on April 10. They claimed the blunder was made at the hands of the inspection and production team, with no involvement from the company NAM HAI ART, responsible for the art direction.

For a community that reveres hand-drawn craftsmanship, especially in an isekai gem about a bookworm's reincarnation quest, it hit a nerve. WIT expressed regret to fans eagerly awaiting the season, the light novel creator Miya Kazuki, and all production partners.

"We deeply apologize for the considerable inconvenience and trouble caused to our viewers," they wrote, acknowledging the letdown. No excuses, just action. The AI bits will be scrubbed and redrawn entirely by Episode 2's airing next week.

As the controversy unfolds, the series itself offers rich storytelling that fans are eager to see.

Ascendance of a Bookworm: Adopted Daughter of an Archduke dives into noble intrigue

Ascendance of a Bookworm: Adopted Daughter of an Archduke thrusts reincarnated book fiend Myne, rechristened Rozemyne, into noble society's viper pit. After a noble clash threatens her commoner kin, she is adopted by Ehrenfest's archduke Sylvester and knight Karstedt, ditching her old life for High Bishop and forewoman gigs at the temple.

Physically frail with mana overload, Rozemyne endures etiquette drills, magic lessons, baptisms, a tearful goodbye gift from Ferdinand, a family hairpin, and guard knight Brigitte. She balances her adoptive family, her mother Florencia, and her brother Wilfried, even as she endures repeated physical collapses.

This ascendance saga elevates the cozy isekai genre into a more intricate narrative, where literary ambitions collide with the harsh realities of noble society, shaping Rozemyne into a calculated and formidable figure. However, WIT Studio’s use of AI slightly undermined the sincerity of this adaptation, giving an unexpected setback to the momentum surrounding the premiere.

What do you think about WIT Studio issuing an apology over AI usage? Let us know in the comments.
