Jill Demling believes she is the real-life inspiration behind Emily Charlton, the sharp and exacting assistant played by Emily Blunt in The Devil Wears Prada. She was Anna Wintour's first assistant when Lauren Weisberger, who later wrote the book, was hired. She ran the office with strict discipline and high standards that matched the character closely.

She then added, "I was the one that was kind of strict in the way I ran her office," emphasizing that her approach to Wintour's workspace was not casual by any measure.

Her office rules reflected that same precision in everyday operations. Everything, including small messenger slips, had to be typed without exception. Strong-smelling food was completely forbidden inside the office. Because of this, assistants regularly replaced proper meals with protein shakes just to get through the day. These were not suggestions but firm expectations that shaped the entire rhythm of how the team functioned under Wintour.

Despite the intensity, Demling genuinely admired Wintour and found the experience exciting rather than draining. She described working beside her as being like meeting Oz, full of energy and spectacle. She stayed at Vogue for 20 years and eventually rose to the position of Entertainment Director.
