Bad Critics’ Reviews Fail as ‘Michael’ Continues Box Office Success

Apr 28, 2026, 3:34 AM CUT

The very name whose touch once turned everything into a sellout within moments, Michael Jackson, has once again stormed back into the centre of global conversation through the release of Michael. While critics tried to pin the biopic beneath harsh reactions and a 37% Rotten Tomatoes score, audiences brutally overturned the verdict with a thunderous 97% rating of their own, proving some stories are never written for critics, but for the millions who still carry the magic. And as the dust settles, the box office numbers are saying it all that even today, the name Michael Jackson alone is enough to move millions.

At the box office, Michael electrified theatres with $97 million domestically and a thunderous $217 million worldwide in its opening weekend, soaring far beyond expectations. The biopic then seized the biggest debut ever for a musical biopic, eclipsing Straight Outta Compton’s $60 million launch, while handing Lionsgate its biggest hit since The Hunger Games: Mockingjay- Part 2 in 2015. Meanwhile, as sequel talks already swirl, Lionsgate chair Adam Fogelson said Jackson’s cultural reach remains undeniable, adding that audiences are having a blast in theatres.

“The power of Michael Jackson’s reach into culture is undeniable. And people are having a blast in theaters.” says Adam Fogelson.

The film’s momentum stretched far beyond standard screens, with IMAX alone delivering $13.8 million in North America, nearly 14% of domestic ticket sales, and $24.5 million globally, marking the format’s biggest-ever opening for a musical biopic. Directed by Antoine Fuqua, Michael traces Jackson’s rise from the The Jackson 5 era to global superstardom, with Jaafar Jackson leading in his acting debut alongside Juliano Krue Valdi, Colman Domingo, and Nia Long.

However, the film did not even take a minute to drive Jackson’s fandom roaring back into full MJ era frenzy.

Michael Jackson’s heart-stole era of reign

Few eras in entertainment history have ever carried the grip that Michael Jackson commanded through his ‘Bad’ and ‘Dangerous’ reign between 1987 and 1994. As the singer moved from the record-shattering shadow of ‘Thriller’ into an even sharper global rule, Jackson was no longer just a hitmaker but a phenomenon capable of dominating charts, television, and entire cities at once. And while today’s stars chase viral moments through apps and algorithms, Jackson ruled a pre-social media age when the world gathered at the same second for whatever he did next.

During the ‘Bad’ era, Jackson launched his first solo world tour and performed before 4.4 million fans across 15 countries, while the album became the first ever to produce five consecutive No. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100. He also turned music videos into cultural events, teaming with Martin Scorsese for ‘Bad’ and unveiling the gravity-defying lean in ‘Smooth Criminal’, later linked to a U.S. patent for the specialised shoes behind it. Then came ‘Dangerous’, where nearly 500 million viewers in 27 countries tuned in for the premiere of ‘Black or White’, before his 1993 Super Bowl halftime show drew 133.4 million viewers and surpassed the game itself.

While Michael continues its thunderous run, the film has made one thing unmistakably clear that the King of Pop’s grip on audiences never truly left.
