Lionsgate has elected to reopen American Psycho, returning not to cinematic nostalgia but to Bret Easton Ellis’s original provocation under the direction of Luca Guadagnino. The distinction matters, since this is not an attempt to echo Christian Bale, but to confront the book on its own unnerving terms. Guadagnino has signaled an appetite for the material that the earlier film seems to have only suggested.

The script is entrusted to Scott Z. Burns, with production shared between Lionsgate and Guadagnino's Frenesy Films. Sam Pressman appears as executive producer, preserving a lineage that traces back to Edward R. Pressman. Continuity, in this case, is administrative rather than aesthetic.

No actor has yet agreed to inhabit Patrick Bateman, a silence that feels almost appropriate. The story itself may abandon the comforts of period satire for a present-day setting shaped by visibility and performance. Guadagnino has maintained that fidelity to the novel’s themes will guide the adaptation, even as its context shifts.

Faithful does not mean familiar, and that may be the point.
