BTS fans worldwide had been anticipating a major return as the group completed their military hiatus, fueling speculation about upcoming releases and collaborations. And pre-save numbers, along with early streams over on Apple Music, hinted at something extraordinary, building global momentum.
While excitement surged online, no one could have predicted that the group’s newest album, 'Arirang,' would not only perform exceptionally well but also shatter records across Apple Music and global streaming platforms entirely.
BTS’ fifth studio album, 'Arirang,' officially debuted as the biggest K-pop release in Apple Music history, smashing first-day global streaming records. Surpassing NewJeans’ 'Get Up,' the album claimed No. 1 on the Worldwide Apple Music Album Chart and topped major markets including the United States and Japan, confirming BTS’ unparalleled influence in the streaming era.
The album’s success was fueled by over 5 million pre-saves on Spotify, the most ever for a K-pop release. Tracks like the title single 'SWIM,' featuring Lili Reinhart in its music video, quickly dominated song charts. Collaborations with producers like Kevin Parker, Diplo, and Pdogg added diverse sounds, showing a seamless blend of BTS’ roots with global pop trends.
While 'Arirang' reigns on charts, BTS members had been quietly setting up the stage long before the album’s massive success.
BTS' return beyond the musical comeback
While V only recently fuelled speculation after sightings of him filming in Seoul, Jin, despite playful denials, had already taken on a James Bond-inspired venture, having transformed his Jin Ramen commercials into mini-cinematic experiences. Jimin and J-hope, on the other hand, immersed themselves either as magazine fronters for Vogue or chart-topping singles like 'Killin' It Girl' and 'SPAGHETTI', respectively.
For members RM and Jungkook, collaborating on visual art and Calvin Klein campaigns had become the post-military spotlight, fuelling the fire for the now released 'ARIRANG'. Now, their activities as a collective are set to be showcased in the Netflix documentary, BTS: The Return, which offers an in-depth look at their reunion that led to the Apple Music record-breaking comeback.
