The Stranger Things documentary struck hearts yet ignited ire, as fans hoped for thrills beyond sentiment. The Season 5 finale divided opinion on whether 10 years of suspense paid off, and the documentary’s exposure of the Duffer Brothers’ behind-the-scenes finale further fanned the flames.

Three minutes into One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5, the Duffer Brothers revealed that they entered production for Season 5 without a fully developed script for the finale. Already enraged by the ending, fans could not believe that they went on the first episode of Season 5 without even deciding the ending.

Hit with such a reveal right at the beginning of the documentary called for an immediate cancellation from fans. Many of them were still sour that this documentary was not their secret 9th episode.

The Duffer Brothers’ proclamations, from Netflix Tudum interviews to their official announcement letter, have inflamed viewers. In addition to that, they insisted that the Dungeons & Dragons conclusion and the final scene were mapped years earlier.

All of this conveyed an illusion of precision that made fans seethe, pointing to the documentary as proof that the supposedly preordained path may have been more fantasy than fact.

The documentary did deliver shock, but not the kind of shock fans were anticiapting.

The outrage caused by the Stranger Things finale fact

Fans went through a plethora of emotions. Ever since the reveal, the Stranger Things fans are no strangers to disappointment. Many were just shocked by the audacity shown by the Duffer Brothers.

On the other hand, the reveal landed with far less shock for the rest of the audience. Between lingering plot holes and long-unanswered questions, many sensed the ending was never as airtight as the Duffer Brothers claimed it to be.

While nostalgia still carries some goodwill, the documentary highlighted a widening gap between the creators and much of the fandom. The scale of scrutiny surrounding the finale was so large that even an emotional, nostalgia-driven documentary could not soften it.
