Hollywood is going to witness a fresh pairing that is getting ready to tickle its funnybones, featuring Pamela Anderson and Debbie Harry coming on board a new comedy named Maitreya. It is going to be a consecutive second comedy setup for Anderson, who is fresh off her success ride with The Naked Gun, which also starred Liam Neeson in the lead role. The movie is set to launch at the Cannes market.
The film centers on Maitreya (Anderson), a rising star in the New Age Healing community, who is about to go to a conference in India when her estranged sister Monica calls to inform her that their father is dying. Instead of staying at home with him, Maitreya chooses to test her New Age healing theories by bringing her whole family, including her mother Barbara (Harry), to the conference with an ulterior motive to secretly gather material for her upcoming book.
Producer and Caviar Managing Director Michael Sagol remarked that working with Jon and Sam to make Maitreya a reality has already been a lot of fun. They are ecstatic to have the opportunity to create Jon's debut feature film, a poetic examination of a dysfunctional family that perfectly suits his absurdist and unique humorous perspective, after working in the branded sector for the previous ten years.
After being nominated for SAG and Golden Globes for Gia Coppola's Cannes film The Last Showgirl, Anderson's career comeback has taken off. Karim Aïnouz's Rosebush Pruning with Riley Keough, Callum Turner, Elle Fanning, and Jamie Bell; Somedays with Billy Bob Thornton; Kornel Mondruczo's Place To Be with Taika Waititi; and Michael Cera's directorial debut with Steve Coogan and Jamie Dornan are just a few of her many upcoming projects.
Apart from roping in Pamela Anderson and Debbie Harry, the makers have also tapped a stellar crew to bring this unusual family tale to the big screen.
A capable crew to put together a wacky family drama
BAFTA nominee Samuel D. Hunter (The Whale) wrote the screenplay, which will be directed by Emmy-nominated Jonathan Krisel (Portlandia). On the production side, Bert Hamelinck, Michael Sagol, Allison Hironaka, and Danica Radovanov are all from Caviar, which is responsible for producing Sound of Metal.
Fortitude International, led by Nadine de Barros, is introducing international sales at Cannes, with UTA Independent Film Group and CAA Media Finance handling North America. The film with the iconic duo starts filming somewhere around the end of 2026, as planned.
Debbie Harry, the frontwoman of Blondie - the iconic new wave band from the '70s and a member of the Rock 'N' Roll Hall of Fame - is well-known for her roles in films including John Waters' Hairspray and David Cronenberg's Videodrome. However, this promises to be a different type of outing from the legendary singer with the Baywatch star Pamela Anderson.
What are your expectations of this new duo in town? Share your thoughts.
