Chris Evan's Fake Chin Worked for 'The Avengers' Fans, But Henry Cavill's $25M CGI Moustache in 'Justice League' Did Not

Chris Evans’ cheap fake chin somehow fooled audiences far better in The Avengers than Henry Cavill’s infamous $25 million CGI moustache removal ever did in Justice League. Over the years, The Avengers has remained one of Marvel’s most endlessly rewatched franchise giants, with even its smallest post-credit moments becoming iconic MCU memories. And while fans spent years enjoying the famous shawarma scene, very few realised Marvel had quietly hidden one of its strangest behind-the-scenes fixes inside it.

After The Avengers, Chris Evans immediately moved to Snowpiercer and had already grown a full beard for the role. But Marvel still needed him back for the iconic shawarma post-credits scene, creating a continuity problem since shaving would have disrupted Snowpiercer’s filming. Instead of using costly CGI, Marvel simply gave Captain America a silicone fake chin. Meanwhile, Justice League later spent nearly $25 million digitally removing Henry Cavill’s mustache during reshoots, a visual effect the internet still brutally remembers years later.

If fans rewatch the scene closely, Cap is mostly turned away from the camera, and whenever he faces forward, Evans casually hides part of his jaw behind his fist to conceal the fake prosthetic.

Earlier during the Marvel Directors’ Roundtable, the director, Joss Whedon, joked that Evans wore a giant “D*** Tracy”-style jaw prosthetic while cleverly hiding part of it behind his hand throughout the scene.

"Evans had a beard. So they put, like… It looked like the Warren Beatty D***Tracy, like, giant jaw on him, and he just sort of hid it like this [puts his right-hand over his jaw]." Whedon said during the Marvel Directors’ Roundtable.

Amid the bizarre fake-face improvisation, both Snowpiercer and The Avengers still rode massive success waves, further cementing Evans as one of Hollywood’s biggest franchise faces at the time

Chris Evans quietly ruled both Marvel and dystopian sci-fi at the same time

Chris Evans was simultaneously delivering two of the biggest performances of his career through The Avengers and Snowpiercer in 2012. While The Avengers exploded into a $1.5 billion global phenomenon and became one of Marvel’s defining franchise pillars, Evans himself emerged as the emotional backbone of the superhero ensemble alongside stars like Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, and Chris Hemsworth. Critics particularly praised the sincerity he brought to Steve Rogers during an era dominated by darker anti-heroes giving the film 91% on rotten tomatoes.

Meanwhile, Evans completely flipped his image in Snowpiercer, trading Captain America’s clean-cut heroism for Curtis Everett, a deeply haunted revolutionary trapped inside Bong Joon-ho’s dystopian sci-fi world. Acting alongside powerhouse performers like Tilda Swinton, Song Kang-ho, Octavia Spencer, and John Hurt, Evans earned 94% critical acclaim for showing dramatic depth far beyond blockbuster superhero cinema. While The Avengers dominated commercially, Snowpiercer quietly became one of the decade’s most critically respected sci-fi films, further proving Evans’ range as a Hollywood lead.

And years later, Marvel’s surprisingly cheap fake-chin workaround still somehow holds up far better in fans’ memories than Justice League’s infamous multi-million-dollar CGI mustache disaster ever did.
