“Tonight is a celebration of extraordinary work and should be a very joyful one, but I do want to start by just acknowledging that our members are having a very hard time.” said Nolan. He cited steep employment declines and extended uncertainty for the reason of the hardship, emphasizing that financial stability in entertainment has not translated into secure directing jobs.

“The best argument on that score really is to look at the work represented here tonight.” Nolan added as he pointed to the nominees. According to him, the nominees were proof that directors anticipate audience desires. They use this knowledge to innovate across formats, and justify continued investment, even as technology and distribution models rapidly reshape filmmaking economics.
