John Anderson, the Country Music Hall of Famer known for hits like "Swingin'" and "Straight Tequila Night," has died at age 71. His family confirmed the singer-songwriter's death in a statement shared Wednesday, October 21, on his Facebook page. No cause of death was revealed, although local station WKRN reported he died in his sleep.
Anderson was born in 1954 and grew up in Apopka, Florida. After graduating from high school he relocated to Nashville and began playing gigs there. His style was influenced by the traditional country of Merle Haggard and George Jones, but also had rock influences. His debut single, "I've Got a Feelin' (Somebody's Been Stealin')", was released in 1977.
In more than four decades in music, Anderson produced five No. 1 country hits, including "Wild and Blue," "Swingin'," "Black Sheep," "Straight Tequila Night" and "Money in the Bank." He had 20 Top 10 country hits, with "Swingin'," released in 1983, being his biggest, topping the country charts in the U.S. and Canada. His other popular songs include "Seminole Wind."
Anderson was elected to the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2014 and was the recipient of the Academy of Country Music's Career Achievement Award in 1993. He was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2024 along with Toby Keith and James Burton. Less than a week before he died, Anderson was in attendance at the Hall of Fame's 2026 Medallion Ceremony in Nashville, where Hall of Fame CEO Kyle Young called him "a one-of-a-kind stylist."
Other artists also expressed their sorrow. Tim McGraw said he was "heartbroken" and had just talked to him recently. Jason Aldean said he started out learning guitar on his dad's old Anderson records and that he was fortunate enough to perform with him on occasion. Reba McEntire also paid her respects.
Anderson's most recent release came in 2020, when he put out an album titled, Years. He is survived by his wife, Jamie, and their two daughters. His family has requested that they be kept in fans' thoughts and prayers.
