Jim Lee, the President, Chief Creative Officer, and Publisher of DC Comics, recently shared insights into his remarkable career and the evolving world of comics. He highlighted how Japanese manga and anime captivate audiences with inventive storytelling, rich world-building, and a unique cultural heartbeat, revealing why these narratives resonate so deeply and wield a power that often surpasses Western counterparts.

Jim Lee explained why Japanese manga holds a distinct advantage over Western comics. Per him, the stories go beyond superheroes, offering a wide variety of genres, emotional depth, and cultural richness. Young readers crave narratives that feel their own, inspiring creativity, imagination, and a broader storytelling vision.

"In Japan, it’s closer to ‘literature,’ and anyone can read it, and it’s not just hero stories," Jim Lee revealed to Nikkei x Trend  in a conversation. There is a wide spectrum of themes, from cooking to sports, giving creators endless possibilities.

"Another thing to add is that in the West, comics and animation have been considered ‘children’s media.’ As people grow up, they move on to live-action. But in Japan, that’s not the case," he continued, explaining to the outlet about how Japanese manga’s appeal goes beyond art style to a unique sensibility that embraces all ages.

Lee traced its popularity cycles, from the 1990s boom to mid-2000s decline, then resurgence in the 2010s, culminating in a COVID-era explosion that reaffirmed manga’s enduring cultural and creative power.

Jim Lee has a remarkable career that has earned him numerous awards and accolades, recognizing his visionary leadership, creative mastery, and lasting impact on the comic book industry worldwide.
