Kenneth Branagh may have stepped away from the Marvel Cinematic Universe after directing Thor, but the filmmaker has revealed that he once envisioned returning for one final chapter in Chris Hemsworth’s journey as the God of Thunder. Branagh recently shared that he had ideas for a darker, more emotional ending for Thor, one inspired by the gritty and poignant farewell Hugh Jackman received in Logan.

“Part of me would love to finish my relationship with that character. I’d always wanted to do more and indeed had a couple of ideas, more in the territory of James Mangold’s brilliant Logan. I would love to see Chris Hemsworth and the others have their own individual final story that takes Thor into a glorious twilight,” he said, speaking to Business Insider.

The idea of a Logan-style send-off for Thor is an intriguing one, especially given how much the character has evolved over the years. Hemsworth’s Thor began as a noble but arrogant prince in Branagh’s Shakespearean-inspired 2011 film, before transforming into one of the MCU’s most comedic and unpredictable heroes in Taika Waititi’s later installments.

Branagh’s comments suggest that he imagined taking Thor in a very different direction, one that leans into themes of legacy, aging, and sacrifice. Instead of cosmic humor and colorful spectacle, his vision points toward a grounded and emotionally rich farewell that would allow Thor to confront the weight of immortality and the cost of centuries of battle.

With Chris Hemsworth still committed to the MCU, Branagh’s dream may not be impossible after all.

Chris Hemsworth has confirmed that Thor’s MCU journey is far from over, teasing that he will return as the God of Thunder “a couple more times” after Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. As the first Marvel hero to receive four solo films, Thor remains a key part of the franchise, and Hemsworth’s comments suggest Marvel is already planning the next evolution of the character.

“I was talking to Kevin Feige about it, and he said it’s cool because the audience now expects dramatic turns with the character… And whatever we do next—we’ve got some ideas to do something pretty unique again and hopefully be [different],” he said on the SmartLess podcast while promoting Crime 101.

That possible reinvention could finally deliver the darker, more emotional story many fans have been hoping for after Thor: Love and Thunder. With plotlines like Hercules’ arrival and Thor’s new life as a father still unresolved, Marvel has the chance to give the character a more meaningful and powerful next chapter.

If Marvel chooses to embrace that Logan-inspired tone, Thor could finally receive the kind of epic, heartfelt conclusion that matches his long legacy in the MCU. And with Hemsworth confirming that more appearances are ahead, fans may not have to wait too long to see where the God of Thunder’s story goes next.
