Zootopia 2 did not just reaffirm that a rabbit can wear a badge; it announced that Disney still knows how to play the box office game. Opening on November 26, 2025, Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde track Gary De'Snake while audiences cautiously line up behind them. This time, both Hopps and Wilde have made history as well.
Walt Disney Animation’s Zootopia 2 has rewritten box office history, crossing $1.46 billion globally and becoming the highest-grossing Walt Disney Animation Studios release ever. The sequel moved beyond success into record territory, redefining the studio’s modern theatrical ceiling.
Among Walt Disney Animation label releases, Zootopia 2 displaced Frozen 2, putting Elsa fighting stormy seas with $1.45 billion worldwide. The milestone confirms the Disney animated movie as the studio’s top earner, while Pixar’s Inside Out 2 remains Disney’s overall animated leader at $1.698 billion.
The arithmetic tells its own fairy tale: $333 million domestic, $1.13 billion international. That balance places the film among five Walt Disney Animation Studios films above $1 billion and eight MPA titles surpassing $1 billion overseas after The Lion King.
The sequel now stands as the number one animated MPA title of all time at the foreign box office. It also ranks as the top global MPA release of 2025 year-to-date, though China’s Ne Zha 2 remains animation’s all-time leader at $2.15 billion.
With such record-shattering news, it is tempting to ask which spellbook Disney consulted to turn Zootopia 2 into a global juggernaut.
How Disney conjured the right formula for Zootopia 2
Following the lukewarm reception of Strange World, Wish, and Moana 2, which critics called preachy and shallow, Zootopia 2 emerged to fix Disney’s missteps. The story replaced weak villains with the scheming Lynxley family and raised stakes through sophisticated world-building.
By focusing on character-driven adventure, rather than safe rehashes, the film made viewers care deeply about Judy and Nick, whose teamwork and problem-solving faced real challenges. If it was any help, the audience was happy enough to see the iconic duo with their classic buddy-cop dynamic back on the screen again.
The antagonist’s personal stakes strengthened the movie’s emotional depth. Their motivations added layers to the story, turning tense moments into heartfelt character development that critics noted had been missing in recent Disney releases.
The movie also expanded its visual scope beyond familiar cityscapes. Marsh Market and the abandoned reptile town offered stunning new settings, while layered humor and pop-culture nods entertained both adults and children, giving audiences a richer, more satisfying cinematic experience.
