Fans have long been curious about Disney’s live-action Robin Hood, which promised a fresh take on the 1973 classic with a CGI/live-action hybrid style. While anticipation built over several years, questions remained about the project’s progress, leaving fans wondering if it would ever reach the screen or take a new form.

As of March 2026, the Disney live-action remake of Robin Hood is officially no longer moving forward. Director Carlos López Estrada (known for Blindspotting and Raya and the Last Dragon) recently confirmed the project's cancellation during a Reddit ask-me-anything segment.

“Its dead sadly. I say sadly because I actually thought there was something really special (and original!) there. Some truly extraordinary music we had figured out for it,” the director said.

Although he added a hopeful note, “I keep daydreaming about doing it independently with different characters.” This gives a small silver lining amid Disney’s setback, as the director still hopes for a creative version, though no official work or updates on the project exist from Estrada as of now.

Originally announced in April 2020 for Disney+, the remake faced long delays, budget concerns, and the complexity of blending photorealistic CGI animals with live-action.

Disney’s shift away from high-budget streaming projects and a crowded Robin Hood market made the project increasingly risky. Even the extraordinary music and creative vision could not overcome strategic and financial hurdles.

While Disney’s vision will not arrive, other studios and streaming services are stepping in, offering fans a variety of Robin Hood adventures to enjoy immediately.

Fans have many ways to enjoy Robin Hood adventures in 2026. The upcoming The Death of Robin Hood from A24 promises a dark, emotional, and cinematic retelling, starring Hugh Jackman, Jodie Comer, and Bill Skarsgård.

Meanwhile, the MGM+ series blends romance, adventure, and political intrigue, with Sean Bean as the Sheriff of Nottingham, expanding the story to royal courts abroad.

For nostalgia or lighter viewing, the classics remain excellent options. Disney’s animated Robin Hood (1973) offers charm, music, and anthropomorphic characters. The Story of Robin Hood (1952) provides a swashbuckling live-action adventure, and Mel Brooks’ Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993) delivers comedy for all ages.

These versions are available across Disney+, Prime Video, Tubi, and other streaming platforms, keeping fans entertained while the director’s hopeful independent plans remain a silver lining.
