Dwayne Johnson is officially back as Maui in the live-action Moana, a return he framed as deeply personal and culturally significant. He called it a chance to embody the demigod beyond voice alone.

“The animated version was just an amazing experience for us as Polynesian people. Maui has been with me for over a decade, and to have the opportunity to bring this powerful and vulnerable demigod to life means so much to me,” Johnson said at CinemaCon on Thursday.

Before introducing Catherine Laga’aia as Moana, Johnson addressed the audience, saying, “All men of all ages, we should empower and support and champion all women. That’s what real masculinity looks like," emphasizing that Maui’s role is to guide and uplift her journey.

The film is set to release on July 10, 2026, aligning with the 10th anniversary of the original animated hit. The project arrives amid Disney’s evolving remake strategy, balancing legacy with modern relevance.
