Before his death, Eric Dane took part in an AI voice restoration project by Eleven Labs as a means of restoring his ability to communicate via a synthetic voice.

"[Eric] was really excited about it, because he was losing his voice, and it was becoming more difficult for him to communicate each and every day. So it became sort of urgent," Rebecca Gayheart told Variety.

Dane's ALS diagnosis in April 2025 accelerated the urgency of this project, as the disease progressively robbed him of speech amid worsening muscle control—he could no longer use his right arm by mid-2025. Known for Grey's Anatomy's Dr. Mark Sloan and Euphoria's Cal Jacobs, the actor-turned-advocate shared his journey publicly while committing to work on Euphoria despite symptoms like slurred speech and weakness.

“He was waiting anxiously to hear it, and when we got it from ElevenLabs, it was a really big moment. It was a powerful moment. We played it, and Eric became visibly emotional. And when I heard it, I cried. I think everyone in the room did," Gayheart said, expressing the weight the project had.

Dane passed on February 19, 2026, at 53, from respiratory failure due to ALS, surrounded by family after nearly a year of advocacy that humanized the fight.

Even a month after Eric Dane's tearful triumph with his AI-restored voice, his family is still reeling from the loss.

Rebecca Gayheart, Dane's wife and mother of their daughters Billie Dane, and Georgia Dane, opened up about the raw shock lingering in their home. She expressed deep appreciation for the unwavering kindness shown over the challenging years, calling the support both tough yet profoundly touching.

In recent weeks, friends and loved ones have rallied around her and the girls, lifting them through grief with steady presence. Gayheart pushed back against Hollywood's negative image, insisting their circle proves the industry has a warm, committed side that is there for the long run. She expressed gratitude for this network, which has made an immeasurable difference amid the pain.
