Floyd Mayweather Jr. Declares Retirement is Over and Promises Another Record-Breaking Run

Years after hanging up their gloves, boxing legends are making a comeback into the spotlight. The sport is known for having dramatic unretirements, but this time seems different. Floyd Mayweather Jr. announces his return to boxing just days before his 49th birthday.
“I still have what it takes to set more records in the sport of boxing,” Mayweather said in a statement that he wrote to ESPN.
He announced his return after a decade-long retirement in 2017, followed by his win over Conor McGregor, which moved him to 50-0 and surpassed Rocky Marciano’s long-standing 49-0 record.
Now, Mayweather is planning a full professional comeback this summer, under an exclusive promotional deal with CSI Sports/FIGHT SPORTS. This is followed by a scheduled exhibition bout with his fellow legend Mike Tyson in Spring 2026. The exhibition is planned for around April 25, 2026, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. While ESPN says it could not confirm the fight on any official platform.
Apart from a career comeback, Mayweather for the past few weeks, has been in the news for his multi-million dollar lawsuit against Showtime. He claimed that they owe him at least $340 million from his reported $1.2 billion in career fight purses.
Amid the legal battle and questions surrounding unpaid earnings, Mayweather’s decision to step back into the ring adds a new layer to the narrative that shifts the focus from the courtroom to competitive rebound.
Legacy returning in the modern boxing economy with Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s comeback
With the legacy and history created by Floyd Mayweather Jr., the present competitive boxing arena will be fueled with the adrenaline rush and energy that went inexpressible with his announcement of retirement while at his peak.
As Richard and Craig Miele, co-founders of CSI Sports/Fight Sports, said in a written statement, “Signing Floyd Mayweather to un-retire after he captures another worldwide audience with his Mike Tyson match-up, highlights our commitment to providing our global audience with the most high-profile fighters in the sport.”
Apart from Mayweather, other boxers are making a comeback this year. Manny Pacquiao will return with an exhibition fight against former junior welterweight champion Ruslan Provodnikov on April 18, 2026, in Las Vegas. Two-time heavyweight world champion Tyson Fury announced his fight against Arslanbek Makhmudov on April 11, 2026, at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London. Many other well-known boxers are planning to return to the ring.
While this also raises the question of legacy. Are the comebacks more of a promotional tool? Is it possible to build a legacy in this economy? With growing global streaming deals, pay-per-view deals, and lucrative international venues, the sports market's incentive has never been stronger.
