It will not be an exaggeration to say that almost every actor desperately wants to be in a Christopher Nolan film, no matter how small or big the part offered is. Nolan has cemented his position as one of the most ingenious storytellers that Hollywood has ever seen. The way he marries scale with wild swings of ideas is something to marvel at, and most probably the reason why almost every actor in the industry is dying to work with him. However, this was not always the case. There are some who rejected his films in the early stages of his career.

Here are 7 actors who refused roles in Christopher Nolan films for various reasons.

Will Smith

Leonardo DiCaprio's iconic role as the dream agent Dom Cobb in Inception was initially offered to Will Smith, who rejected it. It is unclear why Will Smith turned down the Christopher Nolan film. The film went on to win four Academy Awards.

Brad Pitt

Brad Pitt was once a potential choice for the role of Leonard Shelby in Memento. In 2000, a copy of Memento’s script somehow made its way to Pitt. The actor took a liking to it too. Ultimately, however, the star elected not to pursue the lead role, though it has never seemed to upset Nolan. 

Not just young stars, but veterans have also rejected Christopher Nolan movies.

Anthony Hopkins

The Silence of the Lambs star, Anthony Hopkins, received an offer to play Alfred Pennyworth. However, Michael Caine ultimately accepted. What made him turn it down? Nobody is aware as of now. Hopkins and Nolan have never clarified this. It is hard to determine if he could have been a better Alfred or not, as both veterans are formidable actors. 

Josh Hartnett

With Batman Begins, Nolan was set to helm a big blockbuster for the first time in the early 2000s. To play a more somber, serious version of the hero, the filmmaker zeroed in on young actor Josh Hartnett, who had excelled in Black Hawk Down a few years previously. However, Hartnett declined because he was afraid of being stereotyped. He was terrified Nolan's forthcoming Batman movie might ruin his career.

Irrfan Khan

Christopher Nolan has a reputation for handpicking the talent from the far reaches of Earth. In the late 2000s, his attention turned to the legendary Indian actor, Irrfan Khan. But Khan declined a role in Christopher Nolan's science fiction film Interstellar. The reason for this is said to be scheduling conflicts with his Indian projects - The Lunchbox and D-Day.

Orlando Bloom

While the iconic cape crusader in Batman Begins was ultimately played by Christian Bale, it is surprising to know that he was not the first or even the second or third choice for the role. A plethora of young actors were considered before Bale, and among them was The Lord of the Rings star, Orlando Bloom. At the time when he was offered the role, he was overwhelmed with franchise projects like Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean, and did not want to do another franchise.

Harrison Ford

Prior to Christopher Nolan directing the film, Harrison Ford was all set to play Detective Will Dormer in Insomnia when it was being helmed by Jonathan Demme. He, however, backed off once Jonathan Demme stepped down and Christopher Nolan was tapped in. Nolan later replaced Ford with Al Pacino.

There are several others who have passed on the opportunity to work with the great filmmaker, and it was all when he was at the dawn of his career. Now that he is at his peak, there is no actor who would refuse to work with the director unless it is a matter of life and death. The filmmaker is currently awaiting the release of his latest, The Odyssey.
