George R.R. Martin Will Not Release 'The Winds of Winter' in Fall 2026, Publisher Confirms

Since dragons first flew across the pages of A Dance with Dragons in 2011, readers have waited for The Winds of Winter, the long-promised sixth chapter of A Song of Ice and Fire book and the version of the story only George R. R. Martin can truly tell. While the manuscript had remained under Martin’s pen for years, with hopes repeatedly building behind the curtain, many fans had once again begun expecting some glimpse in 2026. But that long winter has now been extended longer with a new revelation coming straight from the publisher's office.
The latest wave of speculation began when Game of Thrones readers sounded the alarm over the weekend after an anonymous post claimed George R. R. Martin was finally ready to reveal new details following years of slow progress. The viral message alleged that Martin had submitted the manuscript in January and planned to unveil it at San Diego Comic-Con before a fall release. But publisher Bantam Books quickly crushed the excitement, telling Entertainment Weekly that the supposed leak was false.
"The online chatter you are seeing regarding a supposed leak is false," a representative for the publisher said.
Meanwhile, Martin admitted last October that if he could clear other commitments, he might finish The Winds of Winter “pretty soon,” though he also confessed he is not always in the mood to work on it. The saga remains one of fantasy’s biggest unfinished stories, especially after Game of Thrones grew into one of HBO’s largest global hits, with its finale reaching 19.3 million on the first night alone. Since then, readers have waited through the long gap after A Dance with Dragons in 2011.
While the book remains unfinished, Westeros is far from asleep, with several major chapters still charging ahead.
2026 is officially the year of Westeros
2026 is officially the “Year of Westeros,” marking the first time two different series from George R. R. Martin’s world have aired in a single year. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms already opened the charge after premiering on January 18, 2026, before concluding its six-episode run in late February. The prequel reportedly drew around 13 to 14 million viewers per episode in the U.S. and nearly 26 million worldwide, making it one of the biggest launches in HBO Max history. The franchise returns this summer with House of the Dragon season three, as HBO has confirmed a June 2026 release.

Meanwhile, if 2026 was not enough, 2027 is already set to raise the stakes even higher. Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest, written by Beau Willimon, is part of the studio’s upcoming slate. Other projects in development also include A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season two, 10,000 Ships, Nine Voyages, and The Golden Empire.
And while Martin’s world only continues to grow larger, The Winds of Winter may yet join that expanding slate around 2027 or beyond, with the long-awaited novel still very much alive under his pen.
