Glen Powell Re-Visits His “Threatening” Encounter With a Fan at Comedy Actor Roundtable

Glenn Powell recently recalled a fan-signing encounter that shifted from flattering to faintly alarming when someone produced a private family photograph that had never been publicly shared. The story felt especially surreal given Powell’s famously approachable image, cultivated through hits like Top Gun: Maverick and Anyone But You. Still, even Hollywood’s favorite 'nice guy' occasionally discovers fandom can wander into unsettling territory.

Glenn Powell shared the unsettling story during The Hollywood Reporter’s comedy actors roundtable alongside Harrison Ford, Riz Ahmed, and more, revealing how a fan unexpectedly presented a private family photograph for him to sign. The image had never been publicly circulated. Powell explained that the admirer casually pulled it out after a draining overnight shoot, making the entire interaction feel immediately off-balance.

“It felt threatening,” Powell admitted while recalling the strange autograph request. Harrison Ford added humor to the tension by saying that the fan must have already collected signatures from the rest of his relatives, leaving Powell as “the closest” remaining family member to approach.

"And it was like it was like a surprise, like after a night shoot, like morning sort of situation," said Powell. This made the whole interaction even more unsettling for him as it was "not a time where you're expecting to sign a thing."

The situation must have felt even more alarming, considering how close Powell is to his family.

Glen Powell and his family

Glenn Powell’s Hollywood ascent has remained closely intertwined with his Austin-rooted family life. The actor frequently brings his parents and sisters into premieres, interviews, and even film productions, creating a public image that feels far more communal than carefully manufactured. Powell himself has repeatedly celebrated that closeness during appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and NBC’s TODAY.

Glen Powell Sr. and Cyndy Powell have quietly become recurring characters in their son’s career through cameo appearances stretching back to Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over. Powell jokingly described them as beneficiaries of Hollywood nepotism during late-night interviews, while their appearances could be seen in projects including Anyone But You, Hidden Figures, and Chad Powers.

The actor’s bond with sisters Lauren Powell Whatton and Leslie Powell further reinforces the family-first reputation surrounding him. Leslie Powell’s soundtrack contributions to Twisters were documented through official music coverage by Deadline, while Lauren’s children have accompanied their uncle to events like the Top Gun: Maverick premiere. That intense closeness perhaps explains why the mysterious family photograph at Powell’s fan signing unsettled him so deeply.
