Hollywood hummed with anticipation as the Beverly Hilton transformed into a cathedral of sequins, cameras, and whispered excitement for the 2026 Golden Globes. Yet beneath the sparkle and applause, an undeniable hush lingers; some of this year’s biggest names were missing.

As the starry night concludes, here are why some of the stars missed the gala and why.

Michelle Williams

Michelle Williams captured the spotlight with her win for Best Female Actor – Television. Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Television Motion Picture for her riveting performance in Dying for S--. Yet the victory unfolded in her absence, as she was far from Hollywood as she is appearing in a limited run of the play Anna Christie in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Williams plays the titular role in the Eugene O'Neill drama, which costars Tom Sturridge and Brian d'Arcy James.

Billy Crudup

Billy Crudup earned a nomination for Best Supporting Male Actor – Television for The Morning Show. Yet the Golden Globes stage did not see him, as he was performing in the West End play High Noon.

Theaters demanded his full attention, leaving cameras and red carpets behind.

Regina Hall

Regina Hall missed the Golden Globes ceremony, as she was under the weather and unable to attend. The actress, known for her work in One Battle After Another, still received recognition during the event. Director Paul Thomas Anderson, awarded Best Screenplay – Motion Picture, acknowledged her contribution and collaboration. 

“Regina, who can’t be with us here tonight, she’s not feeling well," He shared that she had been involved from the very beginning of the project. Her absence highlighted both her dedication and the respect she earned among her peers in Hollywood. Even from afar, her presence was felt through heartfelt appreciation.

Carrie Coon

Carrie Coon, celebrated for her role in The White Lotus, also skipped the Golden Globes despite being nominated for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role on Television. Instead of walking the red carpet, she was performing live on Broadway. On January 11, Carrie took to X to explain her choice. 

She wrote that she would not be able to support her friends or celebrate with admired artists at the Golden Globes that night. Coon said she was grateful for the recognition and acknowledged the honor of the nomination. Her message from the Broadway stage echoed across the awards world, blending theatre devotion with awards season curiosity.

Bobby Cannavale

Rose Byrne won Best Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for If I Had Legs I'd Kick You, yet her longtime partner, Bobby Cannavale, did not attend the Golden Globes. Cannavale was in New Jersey for a reptile convention, prioritizing the pursuit of a bearded dragon over the red carpet. 

Byrne explained the unusual absence during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, noting that the expo was the place to be for their new pet. The revelation added an amusing, unexpected twist to the glamour ofthe awards night.

Cynthia Erivo

Cynthia Erivo, nominated for her second Golden Globe for work in the Wicked franchise, did not attend the ceremony this year. E! News confirmed that the 38-year-old, who competed against Rose Byrne in the same acting category, was preparing for her one-woman production of Dracula in London. 

She reacted to the nomination from the rehearsal room, expressing excitement and gratitude for the recognition. Cynthia acknowledged the guidance of director Jon M. Chu and producer Marc Platt, emphasizing their pivotal role in the project. 

She also highlighted the support of her co-star Ariana Grande, who received a nomination for Best Supporting Actress in Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. Her absence underscored the dedication required to balance live theatre with awards season commitments.
