Hayden Panettiere has directly responded to her mother's scathing public statement about her upcoming memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning. Lesley Vogel publicly attacked the book, calling it a sales stunt and levelling deeply personal accusations against her own daughter. With the book dropping May 19, the family fallout is already making headlines before readers even crack the spine.

Hayden Panettiere pushed back against her mother, Lesley Vogel’s statement, calling the claims completely “false.” Vogel had said she ended contact after years of trauma and accused her daughter of lacking empathy. She also alleged that Panettiere’s recent public drama was partly intended to help sell books, portraying the memoir This Is Me: A Reckoning as a calculated move instead of a sincere personal reckoning. Panettiere has since responded to the accusations.

"Who doesn't want a relationship with their mother? You pray for it, and you hope it eventually comes, but she slammed that door pretty hard in my face," Panettiere told Entertainment Tonight.

She then added, "She has very clearly prioritized herself, which I should not be shocked by," emphasising the painful pattern she says defined their bond.

Panettiere previously revealed on Jay Shetty's podcast that at 19, when she asked her mother to simply be her parent rather than her manager, Vogel reportedly replied, "You owe me" before walking out. These raw, unfiltered moments form the backbone of This Is Me: A Reckoning, Panettiere's debut memoir published by Grand Central Publishing. The 320-page book, which Panettiere also narrates herself in its audiobook form, is described as a "teaching memoir" where she holds nothing back and tells her story entirely on her own terms.

While the memoir lays bare her most painful private moments, Panettiere's story did not begin with heartbreak, it began on a set.
