Twenty years after High School Musical first premiered on Disney Channel, the film that turned Wildcats into a global phenomenon is being remembered in a big way. As nostalgia peaks, the cast reflects on a phenomenon that quietly grew into a generational marker.

The High School Musical cast has reunited 20 years later, with key stars and creators coming together to reflect on the time they spent making the film and the bond they formed along the way.

"We were having fun, learning as we went, and honestly just enjoying every moment together. I never could’ve imagined it would still mean so much to people 20 years later, or that a whole new generation would connect with it,” Zac Efron told PEOPLE.

Even director Kenny Ortega said that if Disney’s marketing matched the energy in the room, they knew the film would become a juggernaut.

High School Musical starred Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Alyson Reed, Corbin Bleu, Monique Coleman, and Lucas Grabeel at a very young age. Bleu, who was just 15 at the time, told PEOPLE he never imagined the film would become Disney Channel’s most successful original movie.

While the memories feel intimate and personal, the legacy grew far bigger than anyone imagined, stretching beyond screens and stages.

High School Musical grew into a lasting phenomenon

Over time, High School Musical evolved into a full-fledged franchise, spawning sequels, concert tours, and a hit Disney+ series. The film’s soundtrack topped the Billboard 200 for more than 100 weeks, while its themes of self-expression and belonging resonated across cultures, helping launch the careers of its young cast into lasting, diverse paths.

Interesting facts only deepen the legend: the movie was filmed in just 30 days on a modest budget, shot at a real Utah high school, and its iconic snow scene used potato flakes. Even Sharpay’s pink locker still exists. Two decades later, Disney+ is marking the milestone with a dedicated anniversary streaming hub.
