The Lady Dior has a lot of history for such a small handbag. Designed in 1994 and named after Diana, Princess of Wales, it was given to her by the French first lady at the time, Bernadette Chirac. The history of the Lady Dior purse, which is distinguished by its distinctive Cannage design and characteristic charms, involves one of the most significant style icons ever.
According to the lore, this specific Dior masterpiece was manufactured in leather for the first time, and it was finished in just one night's time. The First Lady of France gave the Princess an exclusive Dior bag, known at the time as the Chouchou, at the opening of the Cézanne exhibition at the Grand Palais in 1995.
The bag's ascent to prominence as one of fashion's most iconic purses began after Princess Diana was seen carrying it multiple times. For a while, it was referred to as the Princesse before it was formally called the Lady Dior. The renaming is also quite the story.
After being in Princess Diana’s possession for almost four months. Dior decided to offer the same purses to the rest of the world. When they released the handbag in 1995, all of them sold out in just a few minutes. This demonstrated just how strong the "Princess Diana" effect was at the time. In February 1996, the House of Dior rebrands the bag with its official name, Lady Dior, in recognition of her title (before marriage) as Lady Diana Spencer.
The bag then went through a renaissance of sorts in the following decade, with new style icons endorsing it now.
The resurgence of Lady Dior
The bag had a classical comeback in 2007 thanks to an advertising campaign led by Monica Bellucci, which reestablished it as an icon for Dior along with its collection of leather products. Additionally, in 2008, Academy Award winner Marion Cotillard became Lady Dior's muse, drawing a new generation of ardent admirers for both the premium brand and the actress. This helped to further propel Lady Dior into the future.
Lady Dior is still an "it bag" in the modern era; every fashionista's top ten lists still include it, along with other highly sought-after items like the Chanel Classic Double Flap Bag and the Hermès Birkin. The Lady Dior is a symbol of elegance, beauty, and style for bag enthusiasts. Its architectural lines, custom and distinctive "cannage" stitching, and lucky charms that honor Christian Dior himself are what give this bag its seductive attractions, which once got the Princess of Wales wrapped around its leather body.
