“I Had to Force Him,” Mackenyu’s Trainer Details 2 AM Workouts and Strenuous Routine Amid 'One Piece' Star’s Fake Physique Debate

Mackenyu’s portrayal of Roronoa Zoro in One Piece season 1 won universal praise for capturing the swordsman’s stoic intensity, three-sword style, and unyielding loyalty to Luffy, making him a fan-favorite standout in Netflix’s hit adaptation. Heading into season 2, all eyes were on his jaw-dropping body transformation. Ripped abs, massive arms, and striking vascularity reflected Zoro’s brutal training arc, sparking endless buzz.

Lloyd Naicker, personal trainer to One Piece star Mackenyu (Roronoa Zoro), revealed the actor's grueling preparation in an Instagram reel comment. He trained seven days a week for three-hour sessions while eating only meals prepared by Naicker's team. The trainer even had to encourage him to enjoy a cheat meal occasionally, calling Mackenyu his most dedicated client yet.

Some workouts happened right after 2 a.m. night shoots, showing remarkable commitment. This comes amid fan debates over Mackenyu's "fake physique," with some accusing digital enhancements for his bulked-up Zoro in season 2, now streaming on Netflix. Naicker's account counters that narrative, describing real physical changes during filming in Cape Town, South Africa.

Posts from 2024 had already shown his progress after less than two months, revealing bigger arms and a shredded build from intense training. Mackenyu's dedication mirrors Zoro's relentless discipline in Eiichiro Oda's manga, especially fitting for arcs such as Whisky Peak and Little Garden.

But casting controversies are not new to One Piece season 2. Charithra Chandran has probably experienced it firsthand.

Bridgerton actress responds to fan backlash over One Piece Role

Charithra Chandran landed a dream role in Netflix's blockbuster One Piece adaptation in 2024, joining the high-stakes live-action take on Eiichiro Oda's 1997 manga. Fresh off Bridgerton season two, she stepped into the role of Nefertari Vivi, also known as Miss Wednesday. The character is a blue-haired bounty hunter with hidden royal ties from the Egypt-inspired Alabasta arc.

Though unfamiliar with the series at first, Chandran soon recognized its massive global presence once she immersed herself in the world. Her casting sparked backlash from some fans who criticized her Indian heritage, arguing it differed from Vivi's lighter-skinned manga depiction. The debate echoed earlier complaints about representation during season 1.

Undeterred, Chandran emphasized that the story centers on a diverse crew chasing dreams and building chosen-family bonds despite global divides.

She responded to hateful messages by posting them on Instagram with sarcasm, while co-stars such as Wapol actor Rob Colletti criticized what he described as an overreaction from a vocal minority. Both stars turned scrutiny into motivation, one through an extensive fitness regime and the other by immersing herself further into the One Piece universe.
