Amber Rose has unexpectedly stepped back into the chaos after admitting she may have accidentally helped trigger the 2009 VMA moment. Long before celebrity controversies became internet routine, one interruption at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards had already cemented itself in pop culture history. The moment Ye stormed the stage and interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech instantly exploded into one of the most infamous award-show controversies ever, fueling years of backlash, memes, and industry drama.
Appearing on the latest episode of the Ball in the Family podcast, Amber Rose admitted that the infamous VMAs interruption was “partially” her fault. Recalling the events leading up to the chaos, Rose revealed that she and Ye had been drinking from a bottle they carried with them to New York’s Radio City Music Hall before the ceremony began.
According to Rose, the idea itself came from her at the very last moment, as she encouraged Ye to bring the cognac along.
"I'm like, 'Babe, you got that bottle of Hennessy upstairs, like, you a superstar. You need to get the Henny... I'm hyping him up. He like, 'Yeah, yeah, let me go get the Henny.'" Rose said.
The night’s chaos erupted during the very first act of the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards after Taylor Swift won Best Female Video for ‘You Belong With Me’. Unhappy that Beyoncé’s ‘Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)’ lost the category, Ye suddenly stormed the stage from his front-row seat, snatched Swift’s microphone mid-speech, and delivered the now-infamous line declaring Beyoncé’s video as “one of the best videos of all time".
And as Ye’s career has long remained stitched to controversy, the VMAs interruption stands far from the only chaos attached to his legacy.
Ye’s most viral and iconic moments
Over the years, Ye has built a legacy just as tied to viral chaos as music itself. In 2018, a resurfaced Chicago security clip exploded online after Ye instructed his guards to “step back and watch” before diving alone into a massive crowd. Soon after, a bizarre performance clip from Romania went viral across meme culture, showing Ye suddenly sprinting off stage, sparking endless jokes that he had “forgotten to lock his car.”
Meanwhile, one of his most iconic internet eruptions still remains the explosive 2013 interview with Sway Calloway, where his furious “You ain’t got the answers!” rant became a permanent meme across social media. More recently, Ye once again stormed headlines with his huge SoFi Stadium comeback concert, marking his first major US solo performance since 2021 and reportedly generating nearly $18 million in a single night alongside surprise appearances from Travis Scott and Lauryn Hill.
And while Amber Rose’s confession has once again pushed Ye back into the spotlight, the rapper’s legacy has long remained inseparable from headline-shattering moments.
