Jay-Z praised Clipse while sharing an important message about the future of hip-hop. In a recent interview with The New York Times Magazine, where he was named one of the publication’s 30 Greatest Living American Songwriters, the rap legend praised the duo for staying authentic.

Speaking candidly about the state of rap, Jay-Z explained that artists lose credibility when they force themselves into sounds or styles that no longer reflect who they are.

“If you're trying to make young music and you're not young, it's gonna be inauthentic and people can feel that,” he said, before adding, “I love what the Clipse are doing right now and how it's authentic to them…” he added.

The rapper’s comments resonated because they touched on one of Hip-Hop’s most important values: honesty. Instead of chasing youthful trends or trying to imitate newer artists, Jay-Z highlighted the importance of making music that reflects real-life experiences and artistic growth.

By using Clipse as an example, Jay-Z underscored how veteran artists can remain impactful by embracing maturity rather than resisting it. His remarks suggest that authenticity, not reinvention for relevance, is what gives rap music staying power.

Even as he praised rap’s future, Jay-Z also took a moment to celebrate the creative force closest to him.

Jay-Z called Beyoncé an underrated songwriter

During the same interview, Jay-Z also opened up about Beyoncé, calling his wife an underrated songwriter whose creative abilities often do not get enough recognition.

“I think she likes songwriting, and she loves producing,” he said, adding that what she does is “unbelievable,” though he admitted he had never directly asked her how she feels about songwriting.

The interview comes as Jay-Z prepares for a huge summer comeback in New York City. The rapper is set to return to the stage in July to celebrate the 30th anniversary of his debut album 'Reasonable Doubt,' followed by a 25th anniversary concert for 'The Blueprint.' Due to overwhelming demand, he has also added an “extra innings” anniversary show, turning the milestone into a three-night celebration of his legacy.

Jay-Z’s latest comments serve as both a reflection on his own longevity and a message to the next generation of rappers: authenticity is what lasts.
