Jon Favreau has revealed that his source for the latest Star Wars addition was directly from George Lucas’ book to make the jump from show to movie a smooth and immersive experience for the audience, who will be walking into the theaters to watch his The Mandalorian & Grogu. To match the cinematic experience of the original Star Wars films has always been a gargantuan task in itself, with the world and the lore behind it already having been blown up to epic proportions.

Jon Favreau revealed his process for transitioning from the small screen to the theater, in a recent interview with Etalk. Moving from the place where The Mandalorian became a huge success, to the big screen, where it now has to compete with the expectations and the world set by the big Skywalker movies, he directly referred to the original creators official notes.

"I took a page out of George Lucas's book, which is like he liked to tell ground-level stories right R2-D2, C3PO in the tradition of the Kurasawa film Hidden Fortress," he revealed. "And show it through the eyes of normal people, and then no matter how big the galaxy is, it'll still feel relatable," the filmmaker said about his approach to the film.

He also spoke about the opportunity this transition brings with it, as it is a huge vote of confidence in the director’s skills, being given a chance to play in the big leagues. He acknowledged that he was content doing the show and got to explore a lot with the streaming revolution, things that were not yet done in the traditional television era, as well.

This was, however, not the only approach that Jon Favreau took to make this movie, and he talks about it in the interview.

While talking about his approach to making the film, Jon Favreau also revealed that he tried George Lucas’ storytelling technique in The Mandalorian season 1 episode 1, and it clicked. But for this same technique to work for the movie, they have to assume that the audience has not seen it before. 

He also talked about making a whole new generation fall in love with the theaters after the pandemic, and there are already many good movies that have contributed to this cause. He is hopeful that The Mandalorian & Grogu do the same when it finally comes out on May 22.
