Filmmaker Karan Johar made a striking debut at the Met Gala 2026 on May 4 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Titled “Framed in Eternity,” the look aligned seamlessly with the evening’s “Fashion Is Art” theme. It was not just about couture, but about storytelling through design. The outfit stood out instantly for its scale, concept, and the way it blended tradition with modern fashion.

The ensemble drew strong inspiration from the works of legendary artist Raja Ravi Varma. Known for bringing mythological subjects to life with realism, Varma’s influence shaped the entire aesthetic. Johar’s look effectively turned him into a “living canvas,” merging fine art with couture.

The design featured hand-painted artwork created using oil and acrylic techniques, layered with intricate zardozi embroidery, velvet drapes, and saree-inspired elements. Crafted by over 50 artisans over thousands of hours, the piece also included sculptural motifs like lotuses, swans, and pillars. The result was a six-foot ensemble that felt both architectural and deeply rooted in heritage.

Natasha Poonawalla delivered a sculptural art-meets-fashion moment with her avant-garde ensemble, while Ananya Birla embraced conceptual design with metallic elements inspired by contemporary art.

Meanwhile, Princess Gauravi Kumari and Sawai Padmanabh Singh of Royal Jaipur Legacy brought regal elegance through heritage ensembles that reflected royal traditions. Princess Gauravi Kumari wore a vintage chiffon saree once owned by her great-grandmother, styled with delicate pearls and minimal embellishments that highlighted old-world charm.

Sawai Padmanabh Singh complemented the look in a classic, tailored traditional ensemble, embodying Jaipur’s royal aesthetic with understated sophistication. Together, their appearance paid homage to generational legacy, timeless craftsmanship, and the enduring appeal of royal Indian fashion on a global stage.
