Rumors have a way of travelling quickly through Middle-earth, and the latest whispers surrounding The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum are proving particularly difficult to ignore. With Andy Serkis already confirmed to return as the ever-tormented Gollum, while also taking the director’s chair, the project has begun gathering familiar names and A-listers such as Kate Winslet and more.

Another high-profile name linked to the movie is Anya Taylor-Joy. The Furiosa star has reportedly been eyed for the female lead, with some speculation suggesting she could portray a younger version of Arwen, a role originally played by Liv Tyler in the original trilogy.

In addition, Elijah Wood is expected to return as Frodo Baggins and Ian McKellen as Gandalf, reconnecting the story with the beloved characters who helped define Peter Jackson’s earlier films.

Despite the brouhaha, there has been no official confirmation regarding Winslet or Anya Taylor Joy joining The Lord of the Rings cast.

While casting rumors continue to fuel discussion, the bigger question for fans remains what story The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum will actually tell and how it fits into the timeline of Tolkien’s Middle-earth.

What to know about The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum?

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is expected to explore events that take place shortly before the story of The Fellowship of the Ring. The film centers on Gandalf’s growing suspicion about the true nature of the One Ring and his fear that the creature Gollum might reveal its location to Sauron. To prevent this, Gandalf enlists Aragorn, then living under the alias Strider, to track down Gollum somewhere in the vast lands of Middle-earth.

Aragorn’s search takes him across dangerous territories as he attempts to capture the elusive creature while avoiding orcs and other threats. The story also follows Gollum’s wandering journey across Middle-earth after leaving the Misty Mountains.

Directed by Andy Serkis, the film is expected to expand Tolkien’s lore with new characters and additional perspectives tied to the original narrative. Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema have scheduled the movie for a theatrical release on December 17, 2027.
