La Bola Negra premiered at the 79th Cannes Film Festival on May 21, 2026, earning a 20-minute standing ovation. It is one of the longest in recent festival history. Spanish cinema is having a historic year at Cannes, with three films in competition, and Los Javis just made the loudest statement of all. Penélope Cruz, Glenn Close, and breakout star Guitarricadelafuente were all present for what is already being called one of the most electric premiere nights in recent memory.

La Bola Negra, titled The Black Ball in English, the Spanish-language queer epic from Los Javis. It walked into Cannes 2026 and left with one of the longest standing ovations in recent festival history, a full 20 minutes of thunderous applause. Directors Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo debuted the film in the main competition section. Critics have already labeled it a Palme d'Or contender, calling it a vivid queer triptych. The premiere night was described as deeply emotional, with the cast and audience visibly moved throughout.

The film releases theatrically in Spain on October 2, 2026, distributed by Elastica. International distribution is handled by Goodfellas, with a wider global rollout expected to follow the festival run. A streaming release on Movistar Plus+ is anticipated after the theatrical window closes.

La Bola Negra weaves three timelines, 1932, 1937, and 2017, into one interconnected queer narrative. It draws inspiration from Federico García Lorca's unfinished manuscript, exploring the rejection of a young gay man from a Granada social club. At 155 minutes and shot on 35mm, it examines desire, inherited trauma, and resilience across generations.

As the plot travels through decades of suppressed identity, the cast assembled to tell it is equally worth the spotlight.

The faces behind La Bola Negra

Guitarricadelafuente leads the La Bola Negra ensemble in his acting debut as Sebastián, opposite Miguel Bernardeau as Rafael and Carlos González as Alberto. Penélope Cruz plays Nené, a Madrid cabaret singer, while Glenn Close appears as Isabelle. Milo Quifes, also making his debut, plays Carlos. The supporting lineup includes Antonio de la Torre, Natalia de Molina, Julio Torres, and Alberto Cortés as Lorca himself.

Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo co-wrote the screenplay alongside playwright Alberto Conejero, whose stage work also informed the story. Cinematographer Gris Jordana captured the film on 35mm across locations including Granada, Madrid, Cantabria, and Castile-León. La Bola Negra is notably one of three Spanish films in competition at Cannes 2026, marking a historic showing for Spanish cinema at the festival.
