Before Titanic made him a household name, Leonardo DiCaprio nearly lost the part of Jack Dawson. This is because director James Cameron allegedly disapproved of the actor's "negative attitude" during their initial meeting. Cameron even started to doubt DiCaprio's suitability for the role. Before things finally changed for good, it appeared that the future Hollywood star might not get the career-defining part at all.

“There was a meeting with Leo and then there was a screen test with Leo," in a video released in November 2022, the director recalled the same while discussing with GQ Magazine.

He continued, “The meeting was funny because I am sitting in my conference room, waiting to meet an actor. And I look around, and all the women in the entire office are in the meeting. They all wanted to meet Leo. It was hysterical..” 

During a screen test, DiCaprio even declined to read lines. Even though he claimed that DiCaprio charmed everyone, things almost went south when the actor nearly declined the screen test. This is because he thought he would meet his co-star Kate Winslet. He did not know it was a test screening. 

“I said, 'OK, we'll just go in the next room, and we'll run some lines and I'll video it.” Cameron said, “And he said, 'You mean, I'm reading?' ... Oh, I don't read.'”

However, Cameron later changed his mind and gave him a chance as DiCaprio reluctantly agreed. Additionally, he said that his whole attitude was negative until he asked him to start. At that point he became Jack and the rest is history. 

From being nearly rejected over a “negative attitude” to becoming one of Hollywood’s most celebrated actors, DiCaprio proved that first impressions do not always define a career.

The Killers Of The Flower Moon actor received his first and only Oscar for Best Actor at the 88th Academy Awards on February 28, 2016 for his work as Hugh Glass in The Revenant. His last acting nominations had come before he scored one for the really difficult role that included frigid weather and intense survival scenes and that was widely praised.

In the end, the part that DiCaprio almost missed out on was the one that turned him into a global sensation. His ultimate Oscar win was not only a huge personal achievement but also sealed his position as one of the best actors of his time.
