The 2026 Oscars lit up Hollywood with iconic moments that had everyone buzzing. Conan O'Brien roasted Timothée Chalamet over his opera jab, and the crowd ate it up. The whole room vibed hard to K-pop, waving glowsticks like a sea of neon fans, but Leonardo DiCaprio's slick new moustache look stole the spotlight.
It sent fans into a frenzy guessing what the new look could be for. Now we finally know what that mustache was really for. Turns out, the moustache is for What Happens at Night, a gothic psychological horror directed by Martin Scorsese and based on Peter Cameron's novel.
The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence as a married American couple traveling to a remote, snowy European town to pursue a baby adoption. They check into a creepy, nearly empty grand hotel and encounter a lineup of strange characters, including a flamboyant chanteuse, a shady businessman, and a mysterious faith healer, played by Patricia Clarkson, Mads Mikkelsen (as Brother Emmanuel), and Jared Harris.
Apple Original Films is backing the project alongside Studiocanal, Sikelia Productions, Appian Way Productions, and Excellent Cadaver, with filming kicking off in February 2026 in the Czech Republic.
After this reveal, fans have left the moustache aside and are barging into different worries altogether.
Moustache aside, fans are hyped for the Leo-Scorsese collaboration
Fans are already losing it over the dream team of Martin Scorsese directing Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence together for the first time, calling it an instant Oscar contender. There is a lot of excitement around the psychological, fever-dream storyline that promises a twisty ride similar to Shutter Island, with the adoption trip spiraling into something far more disturbing.
Others are loving the fact that this finally brings Jennifer Lawrence into the Scorsese orbit as a leading lady in what is now his seventh project with DiCaprio, a pairing many feel Hollywood should have delivered years ago. Fans continue to trust Scorsese’s process, especially since films like Shutter Island started as simple thrillers but revealed much deeper layers. Of course, a few are joking about Scorsese’s ongoing DiCaprio streak and wondering if he plans to cast anyone else anytime soon.
All the hype just shows how strong Scorsese’s hold on prestige cinema still is. Mixing A-list stars, gothic horror vibes, and mind-bending storytelling is clearly a winning formula, and fans are already hooked, with moustache and all. Now it is just a waiting game to see if the film lives up to all the excitement.
