Luke Bryan Breaks Down Recalling ‘American Idol’ Star Willie Spence

Country music rarely asks Luke Bryan to lower his voice, his hits tend to do their talking just fine. But the singer recently found himself pausing for a very different reason while looking back on his time at American Idol.

In a recent interview with Billboard, Bryan shared how he is still heartbroken over the loss of American Idol alum Willie Spence, who tragically passed away from injuries he sustained in a car accident in October 2022 at the age of 23. Even years after the singer’s tragic passing, Bryan admitted the memory continues to affect him deeply, saying the loss of the young and talented contestant still breaks his heart.

Wwhen asked what he would change about his nine-season run as an American Idol judge, the singer had a very emotional answer.

“The first thing that popped in my mind is: I would have cherished more moments with Willie Spence,” Bryan, 49, said.

“It just breaks my heart for him and his family, and I just can only imagine what his career might have been,” Bryan added reflecting on how heartbreaking the loss still feels he said.

With powerful renditions of songs like 'Stand Up', 'Georgia on My Mind', and Rihanna’s 'Diamonds' during his audition, Willie Spence quickly became one of the most memorable voices of American Idol Season 19. Through those performances, Bryan and Spence developed a warm mentor-contestant bond, with the judge frequently praising the young singer’s soulful voice and encouraging him throughout the competition.

While Bryan continues to remember Willie Spence, who still holds a special place in his heart, the country star is also moving forward with several projects lined up, including his upcoming Word on the Street tour.

Luke Bryan’s 2026 calendar appears packed as the country star prepares to launch his upcoming Word on the Street tour. The tour is set to kick off on May 29–30 in Gilford, New Hampshire, before heading to cities including Fort Worth, Lubbock, Albuquerque, Wichita, Des Moines, Allentown, Kansas City, and Moline across June and July.

Beyond touring, Bryan’s 2026 calendar also includes several notable milestones. The country star returned as a judge for American Idol Season 24, which premiered in January 2026, continuing his long-standing role on the show. Around the same time, guitar maker Bourgeois Guitars also unveiled a Luke Bryan Signature Series on January 14, further expanding the singer’s presence beyond the stage and into the world of music craftsmanship.

While Bryan is returning as a judge for American Idol Season 24, the memory of alum Willie Spence clearly continues to hold a special place on the show’s stage, reminding fans of the young talent whose voice left a lasting mark.
