Madelyn Cline Credits Audience for Being Smart, Drops The Key To Making The Perfect Film

One of Hollywood’s fastest-rising young forces, Madelyn Cline, the breakout star behind Outer Banks, has now stepped into a growing conversation about what truly makes a film connect. As studios continue chasing formulas and simplified storytelling, the actress has credited audiences for being far smarter than many give them credit for. And while the actress is now set to headline her next chapter with Day Drinker, Cline has shared what she believes is the real key to making the perfect film.
Speaking alongside Haley Lu Richardson during an appearance at the Forbes Under 30 Summit, Cline urged creators not to let others dilute their ideas and warned them never to shrink themselves simply to be understood. She also hailed audiences as far smarter than many assume, insisting that the bolder and sharper the stories Hollywood dares to tell, the stronger everything becomes. The actress further made it clear that authentic storytelling triumphs when writers, performers, and filmmakers trust viewers to meet the work at its deepest level.
“Don't let anyone water down your notes or your writing or your performance. I love the idea that the audience is smarter than we give them credit for," Cline said at the Forbes Under 30 Summit.
Earlier in a conversation with Zoya Hasan for Forbes, Cline and Richardson also pulled back the curtain on the bruising road of building a career in Hollywood. The pair spoke of an industry where triumph and rejection strike with equal force, with Richardson calling it a world of the highest highs and the lowest lows. Cline added that the chaos has forced her to sharpen her instincts, guard her boundaries, and grow stronger through every turn.
As Cline keeps turning heads with storytelling, the actress already looks poised to rule 2027 with Day Drinker.
Madelyn Cline’s next big leap comes With Day Drinker
While her turn as Heather in The Map That Leads to You (2025) continues ruling as a #1 worldwide hit on Prime Video, Madelyn Cline is already charging toward her next major screen chapter with Day Drinker. Directed by Marc Webb, the upcoming action-thriller also marks the high-profile Hollywood return of Johnny Depp, placing Cline opposite one of cinema’s most recognisable names. The story follows a private-yacht bartender whose routine shift spirals into danger after she crosses paths with Depp’s mysterious passenger, dragging both into a dark web tied to Penélope Cruz.
Depp leads as Kelly, a mysterious guest constantly drinking, while Cline plays Lorna, a grieving bartender who initially shuts down any romantic spark. Cruz steps in as the dangerous force pulling strings behind the chaos, with Manu Ríos, Arón Piper, Juan Diego Botto, and Anika Boyle rounding out the ensemble.
Meanwhile, while audiences may have to wait until 2027 to witness her next thriller chapter, Cline’s message on refusing to dilute bold ideas is already striking far beyond the screen.
