Matt Damon is using his latest Saturday Night Live! hosting gig to hype Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film The Odyssey with a self-aware, joke-lined monologue that underlines how far out the release still is: nine weeks to be exact. The actor opened his third appearance behind Studio 8H’s podium by teasing the July 17, 2026 IMAX-shot epic in a way that turned the long wait into the punchline, drawing big laughs from the audience.
Damon’s monologue pivot was simple but effective.
“I’m really excited because I have a new movie coming out. It’s called The Odyssey. And it is in theaters not this weekend, not next weekend, but nine weekends from now,” the actor asserted. The line played as sharp self-mockery while spotlighting the film during an early stage of its rollout.
He later tied the joke into a Mother’s Day shout-out, keeping the tone light while looping back to the film’s release window. The humor made the promotion feel organic rather than forced. It also ensured the audience remembered the date without a traditional marketing push.
The episode itself leaned into Damon’s history with political satire. He reprised his Brett Kavanaugh impression opposite Aziz Ansari as Kash Patel in the cold open. Noah Kahan added musical momentum with performances of ‘The Great Divide’ and ‘Doors’, rounding out a tightly paced show.
That early buzz, however, has already collided with intense online debate around Nolan’s ambitious take.
Early Reactions to The Odyssey Split Audiences
Long before its release, The Odyssey sparked sharply divided reactions. The first trailer, positioned as a mythic war-and-journey epic, triggered strong responses across fan communities. Some viewers embraced its scale, while others questioned its interpretation of the classic text.
Criticism has focused on tone and authenticity. Lines delivered by Robert Pattinson’s Antinous struck some as too modern for a Homeric setting. The darker visual palette and stylized armor also drew comparisons to post-apocalyptic cinema rather than traditional period storytelling.
Still, Nolan’s track record suggests early skepticism may not define the final reception. With Matt Damon leading as Odysseus and Anne Hathaway as Penelope, the film remains a major 2026 contender. With exactly nine weeks to go, its IMAX-focused scale and reported $250 million budget position it as a centerpiece release regardless of the current divide.
