Antoine Fuqua just announced plans for a sequel to Michael that will explore Michael Jackson’s controversies. The musical biopic has audiences worldwide captivated with recreations of hits like 'Billie Jean,' blending choreography with emotional storytelling. Still, fans and critics have questioned part one’s decision to sidestep allegations, calling for a deeper look at the pop icon’s complicated legacy.

Speaking to Deadline, Antoine Fuqua admitted the creative process faced major challenges.

“It definitely did for a while, because we had to rethink everything. That was a tough period,” he said, referring to how the team approached sensitive material. Legal and narrative hurdles forced a rethink, leading to extensive discussions with writer John Logan and producer Graham King. Fuqua stressed that the first film needed to center entirely on Jackson as an artist.

“The movie is called Michael, so you have to focus on Michael,” he explained, highlighting the decision to spotlight his rise and stage persona. By framing Jackson as a larger-than-life performer, the film builds empathy before tackling more difficult aspects of his life. He also emphasized cinema’s ability to humanize complex figures.

Fuqua clearly stated that about one-third of the film has already been filmed and may carry over into a second installment. “We went pretty far,” he added.

Fuqua described Jackson as a “superhero on the stage” while acknowledging that no one is without flaws. This approach allows the first installment to function as an origin story, setting the stage for deeper exploration in the sequel. The strategy reflects a deliberate pacing choice rather than avoidance. By grounding audiences in Jackson’s artistry and early journey, the sequel can confront controversies with greater emotional weight and context.

With the foundation now set, the film’s commercial performance shows just how strongly audiences have responded.

Michael dominates the box office despite the debate

Michael has delivered a powerful box office debut, even amid mixed critical reactions. The Lionsgate release earned $97 million across North America in its opening weekend. Globally, it surged to $217.4 million, surpassing benchmarks set by Straight Outta Compton. The film also outperformed past biopics like Oppenheimer and Bohemian Rhapsody in opening comparisons.

It claimed the top domestic spot, pushing aside The Super Mario Galaxy Movie in the process. International markets added $120.4 million, reinforcing Jackson’s enduring global appeal. Audience turnout played a major role in the film’s success. IMAX screenings accounted for a significant portion of opening day revenue, signaling strong demand for the theatrical experience.

Pre-release projections had estimated a lower debut, but aggressive marketing and fan interest drove a much larger opening. The numbers underline the film’s cultural pull, even as conversations about its narrative choices continue. With a sequel now in development, the next chapter will likely face even greater scrutiny.
