'Mother Mary' Director David Lowery Talks Taylor Swift Influence on Film's Performance

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour shattered records as the highest-grossing tour ever, pulling in over $2.1 billion across 149 shows from 2023 to 2024. Fans camped overnight for tickets, donned elaborate costumes, and traded friendship bracelets in a global phenomenon that awestruck millions with its career-spanning spectacle and emotional highs. That same commanding stage presence now inspires Mother Mary’s concert sequences, as director David Lowery reveals.

Director David Lowery revealed that Taylor Swift’s Reputation tour profoundly shaped the concert scenes in his pop psychodrama Mother Mary. In a recent interview with Empire, he explained how the tour’s focused aesthetic guided the film’s visual direction. The project stars Anne Hathaway as a pop icon navigating fame alongside Michaela Coel.

"The Reputation tour had something different. It had… a focus to reputation and an aesthetic style to it. It spoke my language," Lowery explained. Unlike the eclectic Eras Tour, Reputation's cohesive dark theatricality—with snake motifs, pyrotechnics, and black-clad spectacle—provided a blueprint.

"And again, the scale of it was something I'd never seen before. I just didn't understand… how she and her team put that together. It truly felt monumental." Lowery returned to it repeatedly for Mother Mary's lead performances, aiming to capture Swift's commanding presence despite resource limits. Crew discussions centered on Swift, weaving her into the film's pop culture DNA.

"So when we were figuring out what Mother Mary's concert presence would be, I just kept going back to that one because of that sense of scale." This mirrors Hathaway's character arc, blending vulnerability with reinvention, much like Swift's post-scandal era.

That larger-than-life influence reflects Swift’s dominance far beyond the stage, especially in the streaming era.

Taylor Swift’s streaming dominance mirrors her cultural impact

Taylor Swift currently holds the title of Spotify’s most-streamed artist of all time, surpassing 120 billion career streams as of April 2026 on Spotify. She has outpaced global heavyweights like Bad Bunny, Drake, The Weeknd, and Ariana Grande in the platform’s anniversary rankings. Her consistent presence at the top highlights a level of engagement few artists can match.

Her streaming strength has been fueled by a steady output of music, including 'The Tortured Poets Department,' which became Spotify’s most-streamed album of 2024. Earlier projects like 'Folklore' and 'Midnights,' along with her re-recorded catalog, continue to drive massive listener numbers. At times, her daily audience has crossed 100 million listeners, reflecting sustained global demand.

Swift’s success also stems from her ability to connect across generations, with viral moments and tour tie-ins amplifying her reach. She became the first female artist to cross 100 billion streams, breaking records previously dominated by male artists. That same influence is what David Lowery tried to tap into while crafting Mother Mary.
