Law & Order is reportedly heading for another season at NBC after weeks of uncertainty surrounding the future of the long-running procedural drama. The network is finalizing a Season 26 renewal ahead of NBCUniversal’s upfront presentation to advertisers in New York next week.

The renewal reportedly came much closer to the wire than expected. Despite its iconic television status, Law & Order had surprisingly landed “on the bubble” this season as NBC evaluated several drama projects and future scheduling plans for the 2026–27 broadcast cycle, as Deadline has reported.

That uncertainty caught many fans off guard, especially because the revived version of the series had finally started finding a stronger creative footing after returning in 2022 following a 12-year absence. The original show famously ran for 20 seasons before NBC abruptly canceled it back in 2010.

Reports also suggest Season 26 will not currently be treated as a final season, although discussions surrounding budget reductions and possible production adjustments are still ongoing behind the scenes. The current cast includes Tony Goldwyn, Hugh Dancy, Maura Tierney, Reid Scott, Odelya Halevi, and David Ajala.

But for a franchise this legendary, the fact that renewal talks even reached this stage says a lot about where network television currently stands.

Why was NBC never likely to let Law & Order disappear again?

Even while renewal uncertainty continued, it was always difficult imagining NBC canceling Law & Order for a second time without a proper sendoff. The franchise remains one of the most recognizable brands in network television and still plays a major role within producer Wolf’s massive NBC lineup.

Alongside Law & Order: SVU and the One Chicago franchise, the series continues giving NBC a stable foundation in the procedural drama space — a genre that still performs consistently well on broadcast television despite changing viewing habits across streaming platforms.

Performance-wise, reports indicate Law & Order may not match the dominance of NBC’s Chicago shows or SVU, but its linear ratings reportedly remain competitive enough to justify continuation (via Deadline). The revival also appears to have gained more confidence creatively in recent seasons after a somewhat uneven return during its early reboot years.

The renewal discussions also reflect a larger industry reality. Budget trims and cast-related cost adjustments have increasingly become common for long-running network dramas, especially those carrying established ensemble casts and large production operations.

Still, NBC reportedly viewed Law & Order as having stronger renewal prospects than several other bubble shows this season, including Brilliant Minds, which has already been canceled, and The Hunting Party, which remains under consideration.
