Netflix has announced a new documentary starring Idris Elba, which will focus on King Charles III's decades of charitable work. The project will look at all the work and impact of The Prince’s Trust, now known as The King's Trust, through Idris Elba. It will also examine other initiatives that have helped young people and communities over the years. 

THE KING, HIS TRUST AND ME (WT) was announced in June 2025 and is directed by the Bafta Award-winning filmmaker, Ashley Francis-Roy. Meanwhile, Elba seemed really excited about the whole project.

“Around the world, millions are still waiting for that one door to open. This documentary is about shining a light on what’s possible when it does — and why the work of The King’s Trust remains so important”, he said, talking about it, as per What's On Netflix.

The documentary will see the founder of the Elba Hope Foundation join the King as he gives rare access and insights into his support for the Trust over the last five decades. Netflix will show the compelling stories of the 1 million young people the charity has helped across the globe. It is also expected to track the evolution of the Trust in conjunction with changing social and economic challenges in Britain.

The documentary, which is already picking up major attention for bringing together royalty, activism, and one of the UK’s biggest stars in a deeply personal story, is presented and executive-produced by Elba himself. 

The project also carries a personal connection for Elba, whose life was directly shaped by the Trust’s support.

What did Idris Elba say about the upcoming Netflix documentary? 

Luther star Idris Elba received a grant from The Trust (formerly called The Prince’s Trust) before King Charles III ascended to the British throne. It was a small but life-changing opportunity for Elba, which gave him a chance to study acting.

“The King’s Trust gave me an opportunity that changed my life. At a time when I didn’t have the resources to pursue my ambitions, they offered real, practical support — including financial help — that helped me take those first steps to advance my career,” Elba said, talking about it. 

For the unversed, the King’s Trust, a charity, was founded by King Charles III to support vulnerable young people aged 11 to 30. It was originally established in 1976. It helps people with a range of problems- from education to homelessness, unemployment, disabilities, and the law. 

On the other hand, Sir Idris Elba is one of the most prolific and recognizable British actors of his generation. He starred in dozens of films and television shows, including Luther, Thor, Zootopia, Star Trek, Fast & Furious, The Wire, Sonic the Hedgehog, and many others. At 18, Elba was awarded a £1,500 grant to study at the National Youth Music Theater, which he says kick-started his career. 

Now, the upcoming Netflix documentary is expected to deliver more than a glimpse of the royal philanthropy through his eyes. The film could explore the long-term impact of The King’s Trust, with real stories and first-hand insight, helping it to be a defining portrayal of how one opportunity can change a life forever.
