Following Week 4 of the NFL season, two game officials are facing suspensions due to inappropriate interactions with players. Ramon George, the league’s vice president of officiating, confirmed that line judge Jeff Seeman will serve a two-game penalty, while referee Adrian Hill will sit out for one game. Both officials were disciplined for "unprofessional conduct."
Line judge Jeff Seeman was suspended two games for arguing with Arizona Cardinals TE Trey McBride in the waning minutes of Arizona’s 36-24 loss to the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium. The clip below appears to show Seeman cursing at McBride in an escalating argument.
The exchange began after apparent early contact between Giants’ defender Andru Phillips and McBride on a third-and-2 pass from QB Jacoby Brissett. No call was made on the play for pass interference or illegal contact. The NFL began looking into the exchange as neither an ejection or penalty occurred by those on the field:
Hill was embroiled in a melee after a running play by the Dolphins in the first quarter of the game after a penalty was called on Minnesota. RB Ollie Gordon II is seen shoving Wilson into Hill, who then aggressively points at Wilson until a fellow referee steps in to separate them:
Wilson said after the game that Gordon unintentionally ran into Hill and he apologized. Hill said he accepted the explanation and said he was just trying to stop a fight.
JC Tretter, the executive director of the NFL Players Association, took to social media to weigh in on Hill’s and Seeman’s on-field actions:
Tretter continued by adding that players are heavily disciplined for similar behavior and officials should be held to the same standards.
