'Obsession' Star Inde Navarrette Eyes Marvel and 'Heat 2' After Breakout Success

Inde Navarrette’s performance in Obsession turned her into one of the year’s most exciting new names almost overnight. What felt like a breakout quickly became something bigger, because the role landed with the kind of intensity that makes filmmakers take notice. Now that momentum has carried her into conversations with some of the biggest directors in the business.

In a new interview with Nylon, Navarrette said she would absolutely do a Marvel movie, making her interest in the superhero space very clear. She also told the outlet she has met with Jake Schreier, who is directing Marvel’s upcoming X-Men reboot. The interview suggests she is not just entertaining the idea of major franchise work, but actively moving toward it.

She has also reportedly met with Michael Mann, who is casting Heat 2, the sequel to his classic crime thriller. That pairing makes sense for someone whose Obsession role showed both intensity and emotional range. Navarrette listed Schreier and Mann alongside directors like Ryan Coogler and Greta Gerwig, which shows the kind of range she is aiming for as her profile rises.

Her next project is already lined up too: Invertigo, a survival thriller about teens trapped on a rollercoaster after a system failure. And while she said she would be open to Obsession 2, she also likes the idea of the story remaining a one-off or becoming an anthology instead. For now, Navarrette seems focused on proving that Obsession was not a one-time lightning strike, but the start of something much bigger.

While her career opportunities grow, the film that started it all continues to reshape expectations at the box office.

Obsession becomes a box office phenomenon

Obsession has evolved into one of the year’s most surprising theatrical success stories. What began as a small, original horror release has turned into a global hit driven by strong audience response and steady word of mouth. The film has now crossed $400 million worldwide, reaching approximately $403 million in total.

That includes about $245 million in North America and $157 million internationally, a remarkable outcome for a project reportedly made for $750,000 and later acquired for $14 million after its festival debut. Its staying power has been just as notable as its opening surge. While many releases drop off quickly, Obsession continued to draw audiences week after week, including a strong performance over the July 4 holiday.

Its domestic total is now approaching $250 million, a level rarely seen for independent horror films. A large part of that success comes from younger viewers, particularly Gen Z audiences who connected with its mix of romance, horror, and fantasy. That same appetite for original storytelling has also helped films like Backrooms gain traction, showing that theatrical audiences are still willing to support unconventional ideas when they feel fresh.
