Original films have found it increasingly difficult to compete with franchise-driven blockbusters at the global box office. Obsession happens to be one of the standout titles of this decade; in fact, it has become one of Hollywood’s biggest original hits. Its impressive theatrical run has more than proven how fresh stories continue to captivate global audiences.
Obsession has officially become one of Hollywood’s top-grossing original films of the decade, with a massive $403 million at the global box office. The film is the second-best-performing original on the list. The film demonstrated that original storytelling remains commercially viable in today's franchise-driven market.
It has grossed a whopping $245.3 million in the United States and Canada and $157.7 million from overseas markets. This indie horror hit was made on a modest budget of $750,000 and went on to become one of the most profitable movies of 2026. Its phenomenal box office run has also made it Focus Features’ highest-grossing film ever.
Most films fizzle out or leave theaters after about eight weekends, but Obsession has kept audiences coming. The indie horror hit took in $5.3 million at home and $12 million abroad over the July 4 holiday weekend. The film is now rapidly approaching the $250 million mark at the North American box office.
Additionally, it has had good international performance in several key markets. The United Kingdom led in overseas earnings with $21.8 million, followed by France with $9.45 million. Other notable markets are the United Arab Emirates ($5.73 million), Italy ($5.37 million), Germany ($2.71 million), and Turkiye ($2.25 million), highlighting the film’s broad global footprint despite its indie roots.
Beyond its record-breaking box office run, Obsession captivated audiences with a story that blended romance, horror, and the supernatural.
The plot that turned Obsession into a global hit
Obsession is about a shy employee of a small music store, Bear, who has had feelings for his childhood friend and co-worker, Nikki. Too shy to tell her he loves him, he finds a mystical artifact called the One Wish Willow that grants one wish. At last, Bear, in desperation, uses the artifact to make her fall deeply in love with him.
Now, what starts as just a simple interest soon becomes dangerous and frightening, enveloping everything about her life. Inevitably, as her obsession grows to be dangerous, Bear learns that her wish has resulted in dire consequences, far more than he had ever anticipated. The film combines suspense, psychological horror, and dark humor with themes of love and obsession.
Obsession shows viewers how original films can still earn global box office success without the use of a franchise name. The film continues to do great business in theaters, cementing its status as an original hit and confirming Hollywood’s appetite for new, daring stories.
