Sharp-voiced pop stars Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan will release a remix of the smash hit Olivia track ‘Expectations’ on Thursday, October 15. ‘Expectations’ is included on Olivia’s You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, her record-breaking third studio album that arrived earlier this summer. A dance-punk/new wave number dealing with dating dealbreakers and the sour fruits of unfulfilled fantasies in love, ‘Olivia’ pairs perfectly with Chappell’s own confessional tunes.

A Natural Creative Intersection

While there’s still plenty of Olivia and Chappell tracks to compare to the song (released here for the first time!), we can already hear some familiar stylistic qualities in this song, and plenty of moments where the pair’s distinctive vocals intertwine or trade off the lead. Chappell’s lush, dramatic tone provides an interesting complement to Olivia’s more conversational style, her operatic range offsetting the latter’s grittier, snarling notes.

Beyond similar subject matter and aesthetic sensibilities, the pair have previously crossed paths a couple times. For one, they both frequently work with Grammy-winning music producer Dan Nigro (who, tellingly, helmed ‘Expectations’). Recently, Chappell performed at Daisy Chain Fields, an inaugural music fest put on by Olivia that was notable both for being women-led from start to finish and raising $20 million for female-centric non-profits.

Redefining Modern Pop Confessionals

If you haven’t already been convinced of Chappell and Olivia’s musical chemistry, hopefully ‘Olivia’ will serve to seal the deal. Though their solo bodies of work are certainly distinctive, tracks like these show just how perfectly the pair work in tandem, each able to shine on their own while ultimately gelling into a united whole.
