On the set of One Piece, bringing beloved manga icons to life requires discipline, stamina, and serious preparation. Transformations for fan favorite characters demand commitment, and sometimes that dedication reaches surprising extremes. When devotion to craft intensifies, admiration and concern can rise together, sparking conversation about performance and personal limits.
Taz Skylar revealed he fasted for days and used supplemental oxygen while filming a scene as Sanji in One Piece.
"I didn't drink water for almost 2 days. And didn't eat for 3. The oxygen mask is keeping me awake so I can keep pumping it up in between takes! One of the most extreme things I've ever done by far for a scene," he wrote on Instagram, which he later edited.
The edit came after many discouraged the method and expressed serious concern.
After concern flooded his comment section, Skylar clarified that the decision was entirely his own. He said he appreciated the messages and concern, and made it clear that not drinking water for two days and not eating for three was his personal choice, not something he was asked to do.
He explained that he takes pride in his work and always wants to give his best performance, but he does not recommend anyone attempt this and urged people to drink water and eat properly.
While Skylar starved to portray him, Sanji’s story is built on feeding the starving.
One Piece portrays how starvation shaped Sanji’s identity
Sanji’s defining trauma is starvation. As a child stranded with Zeff, he survived because Zeff sacrificed everything to keep him alive. That experience shaped Sanji’s vow never to let anyone go hungry. He becomes a chef who feeds even enemies, believing food is sacred and hunger is a cruelty no one deserves to endure.
Sanji also dreams of finding the All Blue, a legendary sea where fish from every ocean meet. His compassion and cooking skills make him essential to Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hat crew.
Taz Skylar trained extensively in martial arts and kitchen work to honor that complexity. Dedication defines both actor and character, though their hungers differ profoundly.
