The life cycle of actors circles from donning one guise to another. As Renate Reinsve does the same, she shakes up the cinematic scene with a visual statement that has sparked conversation.
Renate Reinsve stepped into the broader limelight with her role in Sentimental Value. While the story of two sisters took her to the Oscars stage, her upcoming starrer, Butterfly, is leading her up the prestige of rule-breaking. Reinsve's role as one of two sisters, Lily, is that of a contrarian, not only by choice, but as a result of familial hurt.
"She’s trying to remove herself from the male gaze," Reinsve said about Lily, as per Variety. She explained how the character's childhood, muddled with the traditional expectations of a girl and eventually, a woman, has shaped Lily's unconventionally provocative style as a performance artist in Butterfly.
"Itonje wanted me to move away from how I’ve looked before. Lily went against normal beauty norms," Reinsve stated. The Norwegian actress praised the film's helmer, Itonje Søimer Guttormsen, as an against-the-current filmmaker, as per Variety.
Renate Reinsve's comfort with a norm-breaking character is, in fact, proven only a nomination ago.
The Sentimental Value of Renate Reinsve's Oscar nomination
Renate Reinsve first acted in the film Oslo, 31 August, in 2011. After that, perhaps her combination with Joachim Trier, or her donning of roles like a second skin, propelled her across a wide roster. In Sentimental Value, her portrayal of Nora Borg evokes the same.
Reinsve reflects the complex themes of the film, of grief, family, and memory, through Nora alone. The role has brought her nominations for Best Actress at the Golden Globe Award and the BAFTA Award as well.
Renate Reinsve's role in Butterfly follows the results of immensely nuanced acting, along with Itonje Søimer Guttormsen, telling just as delicate stories. Butterfly is premiering at the International Film Festival Rotterdam.
