Birdwell Island is calling again. PBS Kids has officially greenlit a brand-new animated series, Clifford the Big Red Dog, based on Norman Bridwell's cherished book franchise, set to arrive in 2027. For fans of the oversized, lovable red dog, the announcement carries plenty of promise and a fresh creative direction that goes well beyond simple nostalgia.

PBS Kids is bringing Clifford the Big Red Dog back to screens in 2027, with 26 episodes featuring two 11-minute stories each. The Hollywood Reporter reports that the series is produced by 9 Story Media Group, the studio behind Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood and Super Why. Animation duties fall to Brown Bag Films. Together, they form a creative team with a proven record in quality preschool programming.

The production targets children aged three to five, building the curriculum around social problem-solving, making friends, including others, and contributing to the community. PBS Kids Senior Vice President Sara DeWitt has emphasized that helping children build and sustain relationships is more vital than ever. A companion interactive game will also extend the learning beyond the television screen.

Emily Elizabeth and Clifford will sport a fresh animated look, though the spirit of Bridwell's original books remains intact. This revival follows two predecessors: the original 2000 to 2003 PBS series and the 2019 to 2021 reboot that also aired on Amazon Prime Video. Each generation has brought Clifford to new audiences; this one simply arrives with bigger ambitions and bolder color palettes.

As nostalgia fuels the reboot engine, the real question is whether Clifford can teach today's preschoolers something yesterday's version never quite did.

Why the new Clifford the Big Red Dog reboot matters more than ever

Children today face post-pandemic social recovery, rising loneliness concerns, and increasing screen time, making relationship-building skills genuinely urgent. Norman Bridwell's franchise has always carried the message "be big, be kind," and this reboot leans directly into that philosophy. President Sara DeWitt's team has framed the entire series around research-informed social-emotional development rather than entertainment alone.

Lessons arrive through a reimagined buddy comedy format, where Emily Elizabeth's big-hearted ideas spark the premise, and Clifford's enormous size turns minor problems into gloriously oversized adventures. The comedy becomes the classroom, making learning feel completely effortless. Ultimately, this reboot is PBS Kids making its boldest, most purposeful case yet for why Clifford still belongs on every preschooler's screen.
